Core topics in family research concern processes that unfold over time, for instance family formation, complex social networks and highly sensitive topics, such as sexual behavior or attitudes towards divers family forms. This course gives an in-depth introduction to the special methodological challenges in family research as well as common research designs and methods to tackle them. We will cover research designs, data collection and data analysis using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The course focuses on applications at the intersection of family and inequality, including class-specific family dynamics, single parenthood and children’s outcomes and the intergenerational transmission of family behavior. The objective of this course is to deepen students’ knowledge of current developments in family sociology and prepare them for conducting own empirical research on family related questions. Basic knowledge of quantitative methods (distributions, regression analysis) is a requirement.
