Der Kurs untersucht den Neoliberalismus als globales politisch-ökonomisches Projekt sowie als Dispositiv, Diskursfigur und Machttechnologie. Dabei analysieren wir, wie er in Südostasien und weiteren Regionen der Welt übernommen, angepasst und herausgefordert wurde. Der Kurs beginnt mit dem intellektuellen und institutionellen Aufstieg des Neoliberalismus im späten 20. Jahrhundert und beleuchtet anschließend, wie dieser mit autoritärer Herrschaft, religiöser und moralischer Regulierung, Arbeitsmigration sowie urbaner Transformation verwoben ist. Diese regionalen Entwicklungen werden in Bezug auf globale Umbrüche betrachtet, die maßgeblich von internationalen Institutionen, kolonialen Erbschaften und transnationalen Eliten geprägt sind. Durch interdisziplinäre Lektüren reflektieren Studierende kritisch den Neoliberalismus als Politikform, Ideologie und alltägliche Erfahrung in unterschiedlichen Kontexten. Der Kurs findet in einer Kombination aus Online- und Präsenzveranstaltungen statt.
The course explores neoliberalism as a global political-economic project as well as a dispositif, discursive figure, and technology of power, analyzing its adoption, adaptation, and resistance in Southeast Asia and other regions worldwide. We begin by examining neoliberalism's intellectual and institutional rise in the late 20th century before exploring how it intersects with authoritarian governance, religious and moral regulation, labor migration, and urban transformations. The course situates these regional developments within broader global shifts influenced significantly by international institutions, colonial legacies, and transnational elites. Through interdisciplinary readings, students will critically reflect upon neoliberalism as policy, ideology, and lived experience in various contexts. The course will be conducted through a blend of online and in-person sessions.
