Students may only take one of these two classes.
This course is an introduction to the formal semantics of natural language, the formal study of the meaning of linguistic expressions. In this course, we will introduce central concepts and issues in semantics and ponder on the question why strings of multiple words end up having the meaning they have and how this is determined by the meaning of the individual words inside them. To achieve this, we develop a basic formal compositional model of meaning, extending it as we go to accommodate a wider range of empirical phenomena. The model is based on tools from logic. We will introduce some basic logical concepts and see how they help us develop formal tools of semantic theory. The relation between grammar and logic will be a recurring theme of the course. Emphasis will be given on students developing skills in semantic analysis and argumentation.
