This course will introduce historical and contemporary Chinese migration to Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. From seafarers, businessmen, (indentured) workers, students and intellectuals, engineers, to entrepreneurs, different social groups formed and still form Chinese diasporic communities all over the world. What was/is the political, economic and social framework for outmigration from China and immigration in the migrants´ destination countries? How was/is their everyday life in the new country? How are they received, perceived and how do they collectively organize and represent themselves?
