The lecturer, Anna Dupuy, is going to be present in Berlin at the very beginning (30 October) and end of the semester (12 February). Two block sessions of 4 hours duration each will take place on these occasions. In between, seminar sessions will be held online via Zoom.
Mongolia is undergoing significant environmental transformations, such as the impacts of climate change, like drought and extreme weather events, the exploitation of its natural resources—particularly through mining—and a substantial rise in consumption, which has led to increased waste production. Rather than approaching the situation solely in terms of environmental issues or from the perspective of Mongolia's cultural colonization by globalization, this course will examine the diverse perspectives emerging from the Mongolian world. We will explore how these changes are generated, perceived, and conceptualized by the local population, while also considering how they are reshaping not only the environment but also relationships between humans and non-human entities. This course will specifically focus on the question of the mining industry, domestic waste production in both rural and urban areas, and the rise of environmental movements.
The following is expected of students participating in the course:
One final essay.
