The aim of the seminar is to familiarise students with some of the foundational debates in cognitive science. The course starts with the discussion of behaviourism and the cognitive turn. It then moves onto the discussion of two key concepts in cognitive science explanations - representation and computation. We discuss theories of representational content, what computationalism is, and then move onto the debates about cognitive architecture where we deal with particular historically prominent versions of computationalism and representationalism. Other topics toward the end of the course include the dynamical systems approaches and Bayesian approaches to the study of cognition.
