This course examines the impact of digital platforms on Berlin's live music landscape. We'll focus on Resident Advisor , a well-known event-promotion app in Berlin, to explore the geographies of the city's electronic music industry and assess how digital platforms influence the local music economy. The seminar is project-based, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. Together, we'll combine app-generated data with Digital Ethnography to investigate from various perspectives and create engaging visualisations. The course concludes with a poster presentation session to display the group's results. Since online platforms curate, organise, archive, and moderate content, they have the potential to wield considerable influence over cultural activities (Poell et al., 2022). Resident Advisor is a digital platform which allows users to promote live events and sell tickets. As the digitalisation of music has shifted the traditional value model away from physical music sales like CDs and cassettes, industry stakeholders are increasingly focusing on live events as a primary revenue source (Hesmondhalgh et al., 2023). In this changing market, online platforms for event promotion and ticket sales are playing an increasingly crucial role in shaping consumer behaviour, and thus, on the economy of local music scenes. By examining platforms like Resident Advisor and how both users and industry stakeholders engage with them, we can explore the role of these platforms in the music industry's day-to-day operations and understand how they impact the spatial dynamics of music—specifically in Berlin, where we live and study. As early career researchers in digital platforms, we aim to help students develop critical skills to better understand how platforms influence local music scenes and urban life in general.
