Though wisdom features prominently in “philosophy,” contemporary philosophy neglects it. That contrasts with ordinary folk, ancient Greek philosophers, and philosophers from other philosophical traditions, many of whom have quite a bit to say about wisdom. We will look at the scant (“nascent”) contemporary literature, and bring it into dialogue with debates about wisdom in the ancient Greek philosophical world, as well as relevant texts from other traditions. Special critical attention will be paid to Aristotle’s distinction between theoretical and practical wisdom, and the extent to which it represents a disagreement from Plato, since this distinction crucially informs – and distorts – the contemporary literature. But we will also try to gauge and to correct the distortion by looking at other philosophical traditions, the ancient Greek tradition before Socrates, and recent psychological literature. Though the language of instruction is English, Beiträge auf Deutsch in Wort und Schrift sind gleichwertig willkommen. Lehramtsstudierende are very welcome, and much of the material is suitable for gymnasiale teaching.
