At the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, the Habsburg Empire was regarded as one of the particularly diverse empires in the European and global world of the time. In this fin-de-siècle, it was seen by many as an attractive center of European "high culture" and science. Others, on the other hand, saw it as embroiled in deep nationalist conflicts and characterized by political blockades.
In this seminar, old controversies of historiographical interpretation ("doomed to failure" and why?) will be critically reviewed. At the same time, it will provide an insight into new approaches that have in many respects led to a new understanding of this state and its heterogeneous society. |
