In this course, students will develop and practise the oral communication skills required to give effective academic presentations to English-speaking audiences. In addition to focusing upon important linguistic, organisational and structural dimensions of academic presentations, the course will also sensitise students to how features of spoken academic discourse in English, German and other languages may differ. Techniques for interacting convincingly with English-speaking academic audiences, for including visual and other resources in academic presentations, and for achieving rhetorical appropriacy in English will also be developed. The thematic focus will be on British-related topics as well as on topics pertaining to literary and cultural studies.
Interested students should send an email to michael.davies@hu-berlin.de by Wednesday, 9th October 2024 and include details of any practical language courses they have already attended in modules 1a and 1b of the MA English Literatures programme.
