Fluency in English
This course is taught in English by the visiting professor from South Africa.
This seminar is conceived as a space in which students are able to put African feminisms in conversation with Afrodiasporic feminisms, within the framework of intersectionality, as an engagement with race, gender and other configurations of power. It therefore recognises, legitimates and affirms knowledge produced from African feminist perspectives in the absence of foundational epistemic conflict over intersectionality. Engaging works by prominent and emerging feminist theorists and writers, the seminar surfaces discussions on embodiment, gendered-performativity, desire and sexuality, feminist politics and the matriarchive, as well as geopolitical affiliations between the continent and in the diaspora. Students will be exposed to interdisciplinary ways of interrogating representations of blackness and gender; simultaneously, addressing to distinct themes like transnational solidarity, sexuality, girlhood, the archive, citizenship and more, while also making the connections between these themes explicit, apparent and irrevocable. This will include the study of popular literatures and culture as a site for engaging post feminism, desire and the policing of women’s bodies, emerging engagements with transfeminisms and transnational relations between black feminisms as new ways of thinking through feminist solidarities within the geographical construct of the Global South and North.
The course is equally weighted between literary and theoretical texts, proposed set works proposed include texts by: Pumla Gqola, Uhuru Phalafala, Saidiya Hartman, Juliana Makuchi Nfah-Abbenyi, Dina Ligaga, Nicole Fleetwood, Simidele Dosekun, Danai Muposta, Zethu Matabene, Bernadine Evaristo, Fatou Diome and Maryse Condé.
