CM6: Special Topics in Psychology - Sleep
We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. Sleep is an integral part of our live and intertwined with some of humanity's greatest mysteries, including the nature of consciousness. Sleep also plays a pivotal role in our mental well-being. A night of poor sleep can set the tone for an entire day. Beyond this, all psychiatric and neurological disorders are linked to alterations in sleep. In this seminar, we will embark on a journey to unravel the secrets of sleep, addressing questions such as: What happens to us when we fall asleep? Is sleep a universal phenomenon across vertebrate and invertebrate species? Why do some people sleep-walk/sleep-talk? What is the role of sleep in learning and memory? What are the biological factors that make us a night owl or a morning lark? We will also delve into the consequences of poor sleep behaviour and how this can increase the risk for conditions such as depression and bipolar disorder. Join us in unravelling the complexities of sleep, a topic so vital yet often under-emphasized in our understanding of mental health.
