In this biweekly workshop, students will learn how to plan, design, implement and challenge a multimodal ethnographic inquiry: that is, an ethnography undertaken in and through a plurality of methods and devices to explore (other) sensory domains and types of knowledge production.
What are the different modes in which the ethnographic happens? How can ethnographic research critically engage with different modalities away from a binary opposition to textual output? And how could this be implemented in a MA research project?
The main aspirations of this hands-on space are (i) to develop practical epistemic strategies and discuss the potential impact of experimenting, intervening, collaborating, and improvising within multi-modal fieldwork encounters. Together, we will (ii) frame the critical discussions and conceptual repertoires needed for aspiring anthropologists (iii) to deal with these methods and materials and, perhaps more importantly, (iv) to integrate these skills into their academic practices.
