This seminar is for philosophy students with the Graecum or the full introductory ancient Greek sequence, who want to improve their ability to read philosophy in Greek by engaging in a close reading of philosophical texts in Greek with guidance on grammar and idiom. Students are encouraged to participate in German or English, according to their own comfort level – insb. soll niemand sich gezwungen fühlen, Platons Altgriechisch ins Englische übersetzen zu müssen! Beiträge auf Deutsch sind gleichwertig willkommen. Prüfungsleistungen / Assignments will be designed to encourage a specifically philosophical engagement with the original texts, with the aim of improving students' appreciation of the texts and preparing them to do meticulous scholarship on philosophical texts in ancient Greek.
We will read from Plato's Meno and, depending on student interest and ability, selections from Xenophon's Socratica. For the Meno, we will use McKirahan's Bryn Mawr commentary, which is designed specifically for students at the level described above – i.e. with the Graecum but without practice reading – and so supports their learning with prolific notes.
