This class offers an introduction to the state of the art in the way methods of Generative Artificial Intelligence are employed in the realm of language. We will start with a brief overview over the history of the field, which will present the concept and important kinds of neural networks (e.g., Convoluted Neural Networks, Recursive Neural Networks, Long-Short Term Memory Networks). Then we will focus on Large Language Models, which today form the foundation of cutting-edge language technology, in particular, ChatGPT. This includes an investigation of the kind of linguistic data that are used for these models, and ensuing legal and ethical questions.
For aspiring teachers, this course is relevant as knowledge about this technology enables them to better assess the advantages and disadvantages of its implementation in educational contexts. Understanding these aspects equips prospective teachers with the ability to make informed decisions regarding the integration of AI technologies in the classroom, enhancing their teaching practices and optimizing learning outcomes for students.
