The seminar focuses on the analysis of linguistic variation using mainly quantitative methods. We will explore the question of how similar or different the four varieties Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian really are (we might also look at Albanian varieties). To do this, the students will learn how to handle corpus data and to write simple Python scripts. Previous knowledge of either is welcome but not obligatory. The seminar also prepares students interested to take part in a 8-days-excursion to Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and North Macedonia organised and financed by the Department for South Slavic Studies that focuses on language policy in the Former Yugoslavia. For those who don't take part in the field trip, this will be a normal seminar with a project-based design. The seminar will be conducted in German OR English depending on the participants.
