This seminar is supposed to be an extend reflection on what posthumanism could mean. We will discuss conceptualizations of posthumanism along with a set of movies, which may strike you as a curious selection. On the one hand, we will explore in which way these speculative fictions test possibilities beyond time-honored normalities/norms – almost like taking them for theories in their own right. On the other hand, we will read them as texts for cultural studies – meaning that we will be looking at the contexts, the sources, and the markers of social differentiation, race, class, gender, ability etc. We will inquiry what cultural work these films “do” and whether they add something to the ideas on posthuman(ist) futures.

Critical and theoretical text will be uploaded on Moodle.
Requirements:
As "spezielle Arbeitsleitung" students prepare one meeting together with the instructor (leading the discussions, managing class activities). As a MAP, MA Amerikanistik students give an oral presentation (outside the seminar), Gender Studies students have various options.
