Oceans are important cultural spaces. People cross them and live on them for very different reasons – flight, trade, fishing, tourism, work, war, science… So how is this reflected in contemporary North American literature? What does the sea signify for different social groups? How can one write the sea? We will discuss these questions on the basis of texts such as Edwidge Danticat's "Children of the Sea," Linda Hogan's, Alexis Pauline Gumbs's Undrowned, and Kawai Strong Washburn's Sharks in the time of Saviors.
Credit for the course requires regular attendance, participation in class discussions, and co-organizing one of the sessions. THERE IS NO AGNES REGISTRATION FOR THIS COURSE. You can sign up for the seminar in the first session.
