Choose one of these courses. You may only register for this course if you have already completed Module 7 (applies to BA Englisch students) or Modules 3 & 4 (applies to BA Amerikanistik students).
Gruppe 1 Eimear Kelly: Essay Writing
This course helps students develop the skills needed to produce well-organized and clearly written papers in the humanities: planning and organizing, outlining and paragraphing, developing a thesis statement, recognizing and formulating concise topic sentences, applying a formal style of writing as well as editing and revising. A minimum of two essays must be submitted during the course.
Gruppe 2 Elisabeth Gibbels: Writing Research Essays
The course practices writing research papers in the humanities. It will focus on the stages in academic writing (brainstorming and research, organising and structuring material, writing and revising). Much work will be done in small writing groups and writing workshops.
Gruppe 3 Elisabeth Gibbels: Writing Research Essays
The course practices writing research papers in the humanities. It will focus on the stages in academic writing (brainstorming and research, organising and structuring material, writing and revising). Much work will be done in small writing groups and writing workshops.
Gruppe 4 Audrey Fausser: Writing and Revising the Essay
This course covers the conventions of academic writing with respect to language as well as structure in a workshop-oriented format that affords students the opportunity to contribute to areas of focus with respect to course content. Academic writing and peer review activities address language use, vocabulary development, linguistic complexity, academic conventions, register, narrowing a topic, argumentation, inclusive language, and MLA style. Course requirements: regular attendance in accordance with university attendance policy, active participation in class sessions and activities, completing weekly homework and in-class assignments as indicated on the Moodle course page, and participating in course discussions/activities. Students will write one 700-word essay on a relevant literary topic with multiple rounds of peer feedback and revision. Students will also meet with instructor for a 20-minute individual consultation on their academic writing. The MAP will be a 500-word academic essay written in 90 minutes on a relevant literary or cultural topic.
Gruppe 5 Audrey Fausser: Writing Academic Essays
This course provides students the opportunity to identify, analyze, and practice a variety of skills necessary for writing in academia. The course guides participants through the process of writing an academic essay. Peer review activities will aid participants in honing their skills in terms of language use, vocabulary development, linguistic complexity, academic conventions, register, narrowing a topic, and argumentation. The course addresses further conventions of academic writing, such as inclusive language and MLA style. Students will analyze articles from scholarly journals as well as practice incorporating secondary literature. Course requirements: regular attendance in accordance with university attendance policy, active participation in class sessions and activities, completing weekly homework and in-class assignments as indicated on the Moodle course page, and participating in course discussions. Students will write one 700-word essay on a relevant literary topic with three rounds of peer feedback and revision. Students will also meet with instructor for a 20-minute individual consultation on their academic writing.
