The seminar will centre around the joint reading of Shamus Khan’s 2011 ethnographic study Privilege: The making of an adolescent elite at St. Paul's School. This gives us a chance to look at a number of issues that are central to the study of education, such as the reproduction of social inequality through education, how schools deal with diverse student bodies and how. We will also get an insight into some methodological challenges of doing ethnographic work and how to use methods in a theoretically informed way. The reading of Khan’s book will be complemented by perspectives on elite education in other national contexts. The seminar will be taught in English. It is possible to write the seminar paper (Modulabschlussprüfung) in German.
