Secularist theories of modernity hold that Darwinism opened the door to mass unbelief. As the old joke goes: Irrigation yields atheism. The new technology eliminates the sense of dependence on God. But what really is the relationship among theology, religion, and science? To help us come to our own assessment of the issue, this course will follow Alvin Plantinga’s argument in Where the Conflict Really Lies: Science, Religion, and Naturalism, among the most rigorous critiques of the idea that evolution can replace God as an explanation for the world. We will investigate and evaluate each step in Plantinga’s argument, along with supplementary readings by Ian Barbour, David Bentley Hart, among others.
This course is suitable for students in theology, religious education, ethics, and students interested in the intersection between religion and culture, especially religious and scientific structures of thought.
The class will be given in English, but Prof. Pally understands German. Students may talk and ask questions in both languages.
