In this class, we will focus on temporality, the linguistic representation of information related to time. In an initial section we will reflect on the way in which we conceptualise time, because this is what language eventually represents (rather than time as a physical phenomenon), then we will address the three major aspects of temporality:
- Lexical aspect represents the temporal development of states of affairs (e.g., whether they have stages or boundaries)
- Morphological aspect offers a temporal perspective on a state of affairs (e.g., are we viewing a state affairs from within or in retrospective)
- Tense localises states of affairs with respect to the moment of utterance (past, present, future)
