The seminar will give insight into the interactions between formalism and avant-garde/modernist poetics in the course of the 20s with special focus on Ukraine. On the basis of a forthcoming anthology of English translations we will take into account different sorts of programmatic texts: theoretical essays, literary criticism, manifestos, on the one hand, and poems and prose, on the other hand. The seminar takes place in co-operation with Dr. Galina Babak, co-author (together with Alexander Dmitriev) of "Atlantida sovetskogo natsmodernizma: formal'nyj metod in Ukraine", 2021. It will start with a series of lectures in April-May, continue with a phase of supervised autonomous research and homework and a concluding workshop with project presentations by the students (July). |
