In the field of education, complex phenomena are frequently transformed into numbers, e.g. when pupils’ competences are measured and transformed into grades or when performance indicators are used to rank universities in league tables. This simplifies complexity and makes the phenomena in question comparable and frequently more easily governable. The seminar will look at these processes of conversion and which (intended and unintended) consequences they have. The seminar will be taught in English. It is possible to write the seminar paper (Modulabschlussprüfung) in German. |
