Studying Transregional Relations of Southeast Asia: Old and New Methodologies - Detailseite

This seminar adresses the question of how to translate „transregional” Southeast Asia studies into particular research methods. It starts out by reflecting a common understanding of “Southeast Asia”, then turns towards theoretical and practical methods of “doing” transregional Southeast Asian studies, and, in the final third of the seminar, applies these theoretical and practical approaches to selected empirical examples / cases.

The learning objective of this seminar is to provide students with methodological skills and expertise in transregional Area Studies. These skills and expertise will enable them to apply particular methods to their own research projects, e.g. in a master thesis or a complex term paper.

Theoretische Zugänge aus dem Diskurs „theorizing from the South“ sowie Ansätze der „New Ara Studies“ und methodische Vorgehensweisen in der transregionalen Forschung bilden die Grundlagen für dieses Seminar. Da es jedes Semester angeboten wird, gibt es keine unmittelbaren Anschlussseminare.  

Successful participation requires the presentation of one example that shows how a particular method can be applied to a selected case. 

Very good level of language proficiency in English is required. It is recommended to combine this seminar with a class in the history of Southeast Asia.

Language competency in Southeast Asian languages is highly appreciated.
