In Social Science, "transnational advocacy networks" are a well established category to characterise civil society movements that active across nations and regions. Our seminar starts out from this approach and moves it further by linking the advocacy work of the network actors to concepts of "profession(alisation)" and "(religious) knowledge". We trace a women's rights network that originated in Malaysia and has by now spread across many countries in the pursuit of "equality in the Muslim family". Tracing the activism of the network will enable us to reflect on the various shapes of "professional" work and the link between knowledge, religion, and professional activity.
Fluency in English is a requirement for participation in the seminar. Language skills in Arabic and Southeast Asian languages (Bahasa Malaysia; Bahasa Indonesia) are welcome.
