This course is designed to introduce students to the wide interdisciplinary perspective that combines an exploration of key theoretical and conceptual frameworks from sociology and related disciplines on the status and experience of the pre- and postcolonial African Diaspora in Berlin. The relationship between migration, social cohesion and national German identity has become an increasingly contentious political issue. Historically, the settlement of migrant groups and the formation of minority ethnic groups have changed the socio-cultural, political and economic fabric of receiving societies. Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will endeavor to understand how Africans are perceived in Berlin. This course is designed to provide students with both a specific and a general view of the status in citizenship, sense of belonging, and experiences of Black people in Berlin. We will explore the role these debates play within the African diaspora’s sense of belonging, as well as how different forms of citizenship are experienced and negotiated on an everyday basis in Berlin. We will explore different themes of African (ing) while in Berlin. Class sessions will be composed of lectures, discussions, excursions (Afrikanisches Viertel/African Quarter and Afrika Haus Berlin), media and textual analysis in an online format.

Berlin Perspectives is an international and interdisciplinary course program for incoming international students to complement their regular studies at Humboldt-Universität. It is also open to regular HU students who may enroll as part of their elective course requirements (üWP). Courses are taught in English or in bilingual German-English formats.
