This is a Shona Practical Course, a supplementary course to the Linguistic Structure of Shona course offered during the Winter Semester. Shona is one of the widely spoken Bantu languages of Southern Africa. It is predominantly spoken in Zimbabwe and parts of Mozambique. However, it is only in Zimbabwe that the language has an official status. The Shona Practical Course is intended for beginners with little or no prior knowledge of the Shona language. It is hoped that the course will equip students with Shona listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The courseseeks to develop learners’ skills in social interactions and, hence, it mainly uses learner-centred teaching methods. It focuses on competencies which learners are supposed to accomplish in the Shona language, for example, greeting and responding to greetings, introducing oneself and others, shopping (at markets and stores), among many others, in view of enabling them to pronounce, read and write Shona words, encode and decode meanings. |
