April, 2020 marks the 500th anniversary of Raphael's death, and this course will consider the artist's career, taking into account a wealth of conferences, exhibitions and publications that will mark the 'Raphael year'. A contemporary of Michelangelo and Leonardo, Raphael rose to fame as painter and architect at the court of the popes, but died suddenly and prematurely at the age of 37. This course will consider his early career in Urbino and Florence, the formation of his large workshop, the decoration of the papal stanze, Raphael's innovative use of prints, his intensive study of antique ruins, and other topics. It will also examine the fame of Raphael, investigating the basis for the artist's success, the development into a veritable cult around Raphael at the time of his death, and Raphael's reception by later artists. |
