This course has been changed to an online format. You will be contacted by your instructor after the end of the registration period. Please check you HU-email address to receive the URL and password to the Moodle course!
In this course, students will be introduced to the field of Food Studies, namely to the study of food and how it relates to such concepts as “identity” and “nation.” Food has meaning beyond nourishment, it can be constitutive of self and community, it can be something that is used to create both difference and sameness. Food is an expression of culture and in this course, we will look at how “America” was/is/can be made through food practices. We will deal with different texts, for instance fiction and cookbooks that represent (American) food culture on both a national and individual level. Texts will be made available for purchase (more information will be provided in the first session). In addition, we will read the following novel (that needs to be purchased): With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo (2019).
Requirements: regular participation & attendance, 3 written assignments (food memoir, thesis statement, study questions) |
