This seminar offers a detailed examination of mainland China’s efforts to mitigate environmental crisis and secure a sustainable development pathway—which the state dubs China’s green transformation （绿色转型)—by placing its experiences in comparative perspective. We begin with an exploration of a comparative literature that considers what particular configurations of state and society support/hinder so-called “green transitions” and “green transformations.” With these insights in mind, we then turn to a close look at key elements of China’s recently-launched green transformation including the role of the state at both central and local levels, civil society and firms.
