This seminar places China’s experience of rapid economic development in the context of similar experiences of rapid growth in the East Asian region. The course first introduces the concept of the developmental state through close examination of the theory and practice of post-war economic development in various East Asian countries with a particular focus on the archetypal case of post-war Japan. We then turn to in-depth analysis of how the developmental state has influenced economic theory and practice in reform-era China (1978-), with an eye to identifying continuity and breaks with previous instantiations of the developmental state. |
