This seminar will situate East African Literature in the English language within the larger corpus of African literatures as a whole. Initial attention will be directed at indigenous East African literature and its development into written forms. Focus will further be placed on the emergence of this literature in the English Language and its transformation especially from the 1960s to contemporary times. Interest will be directed to the subjects of black aesthetics/authenticity, colonization, decolonization, globalization processes and how the question of the nation/nationalism are engaged by its authors. Further, a comparative and critical insights into the political, social, and cultural processes and emerging identities that have informed literary creativity from East Africa will be discussed. A critical insight will be placed on the genre of the African dictator novel. Further the topic of gender will also be explored first as an approach to survey the representation of women in east African literature and secondly how they emerged, through their writing, to depict resilience and survival. Novels, short stories, plays, and poetry will be selected from East Africa and its Diaspora with connections to Tanzania, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda and Ethiopia. Critical theories and concepts like identity, culture, decolonization, narratology, feminism, and New Historicism will be relevant approaches in this seminar.
