This course will examine the relationship between law, culture and rights as these are perceived in various societies. It examines the role of law in transnational relations and globalization within a variety of social contexts both within nation-states and beyond their boundaries. Among topics for discussion are identifying law in plural social contexts, law beyond the state: anthropological perspectives, religion and law, culture and human rights, reconceiving citizenship, and gendered identities. Its subject matter will also form a complimentary perspective to modules on culture and identity culture and identity (2,12), society and transformation (3,11) and Asia and Africa today (10). The course will be taught on a seminar basis and students will be asked to prepare readings for discussion in class. Students may also be split into groups to carry out class exercises set for specific topics, after which they will report back to the class as a whole. In addition, some sessions will be given over to films illustrating topics from the seminars. Assessment will take the form of a short written paper. |
