This seminar aims at introducing basic knowledge in African languages and linguistics. Following an overview of language structures in the domains of phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, different groups of African languages will be presented (e.g., "Afroasiatic", "Niger-Kordofanian", "Nilo-Saharan", "Khoisan"). In the third section of this course, we will discuss social and other external aspects of language, such as variation ("dialects", "registers"), multilingualism, language policy and writing. Participants are requested to read one basic text per session. There will be an examination at the end of the course. |
