The boundaries of un/freedom in histories of work - Detailseite

What distinguishes slavery, forced labor, unfree labor from so-called "free-labor"? How did historical actors in the past conceptualize the boundaries of un/freedom in the context of work? How were these distinctions and the labor practices that went with it embedded in specific global and local hierarchies of gender, race and class? This course approaches the question of the boundaries of freedom and unfreedom by looking at different labor relationships situated at the border between freedom and unfreedom. Case studies will focus on multiple world regions include indentured labor, slavery, labor relations after the abolition of slavery, gender and un/free labor, forced labor, prison labor, labor migration, international governance of un/free labor and, finally, current issues concerning human trafficking.

This will be a reading-intensive course most apt for advanced students with a background in social and labor history.
