State destruction and state creation in the aftermath of the First World War - Detailseite

In the aftermath of the First World War, several new states and mandates emerged out of the abrupt dissolution of three vast Empires, which ceased to exist after several centuries as prominent actors in International politics. The territories of the Russian, Habsburg and Ottoman Empires became the subject of a complex process of territorial fragmentation into a variety of new structures of statehood or new patterns of imperial domination. This Block-Seminar will offer students a critical overview of these events within a theoretical framework that discusses the problem of state destruction and state creation in International History. The core themes of the seminar and main debates related to the course will be presented in an introductory session at the beginning of November, while the two block-sessions will take place at the end of January and beginning of February. Students are expected to read extensively and independently between November and the end of January in order to participate actively in the discussions that will take place in early 2020. The course is intended for participants with previous knowledge of Modern International History and students with an interest in an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of the past.
