Moral psychology, broadly construed to include such issues as moral motivation, virtue, eudaimonism, natural desires and pleasures, and emotions, occupies a central place in Plato’s philosophy, being addressed in various forms in numerous dialogues. In this seminar we will examine a selection of issues related to Plato’s moral psychology, by reading a selection of both primary texts and important secondary literature, which will be made available on Moodle. This seminar is aimed at advanced students who already have some background in Plato and/or moral psychology. It would be advantageous to have some familiarity with at least the Republic prior to the start of the semester. The readings will be (mostly) in English. No knowledge of ancient Greek is required, though the Greek text will be discussed at times.
