Selected Topics in the Economic History of the Middle East - Detailseite

This seminar covers the major issues in the economic history of the Middle East: the “great divergence” between the Middle East and Europe over the second millennium, the transformation of the regional economies after the industrial revolution in the 19^th century, the planning and Arab socialism during the decolonization of the 20^th century, the oil economies and rentier states and finally the economics of the Arab Spring. It aims to combine historical scholarship with the most recent research in economics/economic history. It draws comparisons with other parts of the world throughout, reconsidering the history of the region as a part of the global history.

The seminar is open to Economics, History and Political science students. But priority will be given to Economics students. Each student is required to make a presentation on a weekly topic selected from the course syllabus. The final grade will be solely based on the term paper to be submitted until the end of August.
