In modern democracies, governments need to pay attention to public opinion, i.e. the aggregated attitudes of individuals which mirror the prevailing opinion of the majority in a society. Hence, public opinion has a significant impact on political decisions and political behavior. Moreover, political attitudes and political behavior, such as political participation, of individuals are shaped by the social context a person lives in. In this course, we try to identify some key impact factors of public opinion as well as political participation. What shapes public opinion, how can political participation be explained, and how do these concepts interact? We regard main concepts as e.g. Euroscepticism, globalization, institutional trust, the “left behinds”, and “Politikverdrossenheit”. In this course, we will apply quantitative methods to replicate models from the literature. Thus, it has a strong empirical applied focus and is directed to students who have basic knowledge of quantitative methods and the statistic software STATA |
