This course studies the interesting ways in which the self-projection of the British as the 'civilizing' ruling race in colonial India was made fragile by the presence of a sizeable number and various categories of 'lowly' Europeans in India. The colonial city of Calcutta as one of the three Presidency cities is an eminent site on which our study may be based. We also seek to explore the ways in which class and gender shot through and complicated this 'problem' for the ruling race. |
