This seminar aims to explore a broad panorama of Latin American baroque architecture and its later reception. Along with selected study cases of baroque constructions—such as the Church of St. Lawrence of Carangas in Potosí, Bolívia; the Zacatecas Cathedral in Mexico; Aleijadinho’s churches in Minas Gerais, Brazil; among others—we will discuss texts by Latin American authors that were influential for a modernist reception of the baroque in the 20th century.
The historicization of the baroque in Latin America was often articulated in connection to its postcoloniality, addressing the particular issues of these independent former colonies, such as racial constitution, artistic authenticity, or cultural identity.
Thinkers such as Lezama Lima (Cuba), Ángel Guido (Argentina), Mário de Andrade (Brazil), among others in Mexico, Uruguay, and Peru, developed interpretations of the baroque that allow us to glimpse at the processes that governed not only the colonial baroque but also a particular modernism that was embedded in postcolonial demands. This seminar intends to navigate both temporalities, establishing a dialogue between the baroque objects of study and the 20th-century texts.
