Interface phenomena are linguistic phenomena that involve multiple levels of grammatical representation. Studying these are essential for understanding the architecture of grammar and the interaction between grammar and pragmatics. This course deals with the processing and acqusition of phenomena that lie at the interface of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, including negation, modality and conditionals. It consists of three components: 1) lectures, 2) student presentations and 3) hands-on experience of preparing an experimental study in groups (from research questions to the study design) — In doing so, the students develop abilities to critically reflect on the subject areas, to evaluate existing analyses and to design their own empirical study. Through the course, the students can acquire knowledge of theories of grammar, language processing and acqusition as well as additional analytical and empirical skills.
