This class will focus on natural language quantifiers ("some", "most", "more than n") as well as connectives ("or", "and", "but") from the perspective of semantics and pragmatics. The focus of our investigation will be on cross-linguistic variation and how that can inform our understanding of language. Time allowing, we will also touch on issues dealing with acquisition and whenever possible, we will include a discussion of relevant experimental work. Participants will be expected to engage with weekly readings and give presentations on relevant topics.
