In this course, we will take selected phonological phenomena found in different varieties of contemporary English as a starting point for an exploration of the acoustic and articulatory properties of speech, the way in which speech sounds are organised, and how native speakers' subconscious knowledge of speech patterns can best be described. Students will develop their analytical skills by investigating sound patterns in different languages and dialects, and by examining the properties of of their own and others' speech.
