The course is designed to give students an overview of North American literary history. At the same time, it serves to prepare MA students for teaching a tutorial (Lektüreübung) in the BA American Studies. Selected primary texts of particular importance for these tutorials will be discussed in class with a particular focus on central issues in American Studies as well as different ways of reading North American literature and culture.
The course will be based primarily on selections from the Norton Anthology of American Literature, Shorter Ninth Edition, which will be available on Moodle. Credit for the course requires reading the texts, participating in class discussions, and introducing one of the literary works.
