In this course we will explore the law of torts (civil wrongs). Largely based on case law, the law of torts offers an interesting insight in the operations of the common law system. Therefore we will start with a short introduction to the common law, followed by a discussion of the tort of negligence and its component parts of duty of care, breach of that duty, causation and remoteness; occupiers’ liability; trespass; and defamation. Finally, we will discuss the defences available and damages (compensation).
