This lecture provides a historical introduction to the English Legal System. The historical part explains in particular the development of the system of actions before the King´s Courts, of a separate Equity jurisdiction before the Chancellor´s Courts, and the modernisation of English law during the 19th century reforms. For modern English law, the lecure covers in particular: - sources of English law: case law as developed through the courts, the doctrine of binding precedent, statutes and statutory instruments, and customary law; - courts, jurisdiction and the jury system; - introductions to the civil justice system and the criminal justice system; - legal professions, in particular solicitors, barristers, judges, and legal education. Previous knowledge of English law is not required. The entire lecture will be given in the English language. All interested students are welcome to attend. They are, however, advised that the lecture has not been written particularly for German law students, but forms part of the Master of British Studies course offered by the Centre for British Studies.
