In the past two decades, the Sahel, a vaguely defined region south of the Sahara Desert between the Senegal River and Darfur, has become a central area in a set of global political, economic, and cultural entanglements in the shape of military conflicts and social cultural and religious exchanges. This course will look into these developments and their origins in the historical processes that shaped the region in the past short century. Decolonization, drought, famine, sedentarisation, urbanization, mining, nationalism, Salafism, unemployment, and electric guitars, are the keywords for this course. Important notice: with the exception of Nigeria, all countries of the Sahel were French colonies. French is the national language of these countries and most relevant academic literature, as well as the majority of source material, is in French. Passive knowledge of French on an academic level is a prerequisite to participation in this course. Knowledge of Hausa, Bambara, and /or Arabic (or any other Sahel language) is an advantage. |
