Forced Migration in South and Southeast Asia - Detailseite

Forced migration refers to the movements of refugees and internally displaced people (displaced by conflict) as well as people displaced by natural or environmental disasters, chemical or nuclear disasters, famine, or development projects” (Forced Migration Review n.d.). In this seminar, we take a transregional perspective on key types, dimensions and issues of forced migration across South and Southeast Asia, centered around case studies from Europe, MENA, South and Southeast Asia (in particular: Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan).

This seminar will provide students with an introduction into the research field of forced migration. Apart from reading key theoretical and introductory texts to the study of forced migration, a case studies-approach will introduce context-sensitive as well as transregional perspectives on diverse phenomena and manifestations of forced migrations, such as research ethics and research methods in forced migration studies, big data and new technologies, deportation and (forced) return, forced migration in pandemic times, protracted displacement, forced migration and cities, forced migrant activisms, among others.
